Frequently Used Transit Terms

Fixed Route

Service provided on a repetitive, fixed-schedule basis along a specific route with vehicles stopping to pick up and deliver passengers to specific locations. Each fixed-route trip serves the same origins and destinations, unlike demand response and taxicabs.

Paratransit

Comparable transportation service required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 for individuals with disabilities who are unable to use fixed-route transportation systems.

DART Mobile App

The DART Transit app provides Fixed Route and Paratransit service information along with DART Pass, a contactless and convenient way to purchase and pay your fare using your phone.

Fixed Route Schedule Information and General Assistance

Q. What are the hours of operation for fixed route buses?

A. Span of service varies by route. Please see specific route schedules.

Q. Where can I get statewide bus route information and assistance?

A. For statewide information visit route schedules, or contact DART Information Center Specialists at 1-800-652-DART (3278), Option 1, Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m., on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Q. Does DART First State provide bus service on holidays?

A. DART fixed route services do not operate on the following holidays, with the following exceptions:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day*
  • Independence Day*
  • Labor Day*
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

NEW *Holiday Service will be offered on Bus Routes 2, 4, 5, 6, 13, 15, 33 and 40 operating a Sunday schedule and Route 47 operating its Saturday schedule on Memorial Day, July 5 and Labor Day, with Paratransit operating complimentary ADA-only service. Regular Sunday service operates on Independence Day, Sunday, July 4.


Fixed Route Fare Information

Q. What is a valid form of payment?

A.Pay your fare easily using DART Pass mobile payment app, cash (exact change), Daily, 7 or 30-Day Passes, 20-Ride Ticket (available on DART Pass only), or Agency 2-Ride tickets.

Q. Where can I purchase DART tickets?

A. Purchase tickets by using the DART Pass mobile payment app, online at DART Ticket Sales, by phone at (302) 576-6021, or from a DART Ticket Sales Outlet Location near you.

Q. How can I find out how much my fare will be?

A.For your convenience, fares are listed on the printed schedules and online under Bus Fares. If you need further information, please contact our Information Center at 1-800-652-DART (3278), Option 1. Our Information Center Specialists are glad to assist you.

Q. Do I have to pay for my young children?

A.Two children (46 inches in height or under) may ride fixed route buses free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult.


Paratransit Information

Q. How do I know if I am eligible for paratransit service?

A. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ensures individuals with disabilities comparable transportation within ¾ of a mile of a local regular bus route.

You can obtain eligibility and application information by visiting Paratransit Services.

For Paratransit fare information, visit Bus Fares. Paratransit fares are purchased using the DART Pass mobile payment app, Paratransit Strip Tickets online, or with cash. The fare for an ADA Paratransit trip or connector trip is $4.00. A Non-ADA Demand Response trip is $6.00.

Earlier or later hours may be available if fixed route bus service is available on the day and the times you wish to travel. The origin and destination of your trip must be within ¾-mile radius of fixed route.

*Outside of the DART Service Area refers to Southern New Castle County and areas beyond the ¾-mile radius of our nearest regularly scheduled fixed route service.

**Kent County - Saturday - For trips that are within the service area (origin and destination are within ¾-mile of fixed-route), the latest pick up time is 5:30 pm.

Paratransit Service is not available on the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day*
  • Independence Day*
  • Labor Day*
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

*ADA-only Paratransit Service is available on these holidays only in the areas and during hours where regular bus service is operating (Beach Bus Services, Limited New Castle County).
